Local Treasures: Make a Day of It

If you’re planning a visit to The Flower Stand, I hope you’ll linger a little longer and explore some of my favorite local spots. One of the things I love most about living and growing flowers here is the community of small businesses, makers, and gathering places that make this corner of Wisconsin special.

Start in Rochester
A visit to Rochester isn’t complete without a stop at DW Coffee. Housed in a historic bank building on the corner of Highway D and Highway W, it’s the kind of place where neighbors catch up over coffee and visitors instantly feel welcome. Grab a cup, admire the beautiful leaded glass windows and artwork, or settle onto the patio and watch the town wake up.

Just next door, you’ll find Fox and Fork, a thoughtfully curated shop filled with antiques, home décor, handmade goods, soaps, wine, and gifts. It’s the sort of place where you walk in for a quick look and leave wondering how you ended up with three things you didn’t know you needed.

A Hidden Gem Near the Farm
Just around the corner from Circus Seed Flowers is DiPaolo Farm and Mercantile. Part working farm, part shopping destination, this beautiful property feels like stepping back in time. Browse artisan goods, fresh local foods, and unique finds tucked inside a charming barn and historic log house. It’s one of those places that invites you to slow down and wander.

Spend Some Time in Waterford
Our little downtown is full of character, with historic Cream City brick buildings lining the Fox River. Take a stroll along Main Street, grab lunch, and explore the independent shops and restaurants that make Waterford feel like home.

One of my favorite stops is Reads by the River, a cozy independent bookstore overlooking the water. If you’re anything like me, you’ll leave with a stack of books you didn’t plan on buying. Afterward, take a walk through Ten Club Park, where you’ll find river views, picnic areas, a splash pad, and plenty of places to simply sit and enjoy the day.

Hungry? Local favorites include Noble Brothers Creamery, Scungilli’s Italian Eatery, and Doc’s on the Fox, especially if the weather is nice enough for patio dining.

Explore Downtown Burlington
A few miles away, Downtown Burlington offers another charming afternoon of exploring. Historic brick buildings, local shops, breweries, galleries, and restaurants line the streets, creating a vibrant small-town atmosphere.

Stop by Foxville Gallery, browse the boutiques, grab a coffee at The Coffee House at Chestnut & Pine, or treat yourself to something sweet from Blackbird Bakery. If you’re looking for lunch or a local brew, Brew & Ole’s and The Runaway Micropub are always worth a visit.

And if you’re lucky, the breeze might carry the scent of chocolate from the Nestlé factory through downtown.

MORE IMPORTANTLY: One Last Tip
If flowers are making the trip home with you, bring an insulated cooler. Fresh flowers and hot cars are not friends. A cooler will help keep your bouquet looking beautiful while you enjoy the rest of your adventure.

After all, flowers are just the beginning.
